The resignation of Merlimau assemblyman Muhamad Akmal Saleh as a Melaka state executive councillor is expected to be discussed this week.
Discussion with Yang di-Pertua Negeri anticipated
Akmal, who is also Umno Youth chief, said Melaka Chief Minister Ab Rauf Yusoh will consult the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Mohd Ali Rustam on the matter.
“InsyaAllah, it will be discussed this week and a decision will be made, so there’s no need to worry,” he said in a video posted on his Facebook page.
Clarifying media confusion
His remarks followed confusion sparked by headlines suggesting he had not resigned.
“Yesterday, headlines caused a stir with the chief minister’s statement that I remain a Melaka exco,” he explained.
“Many only read the headline and assumed things, calling it drama or lies, without reading the full text. I want to set the record straight.”
Akmal said he submitted his resignation letter to the Yang di-Pertua Negeri through the chief minister on January 19.
No official discussion has taken place yet because the Yang di-Pertua Negeri was on leave and the chief minister was on an official trip abroad.
Process follows state constitution
“My exco position was appointed by the Yang di-Pertua Negeri under the state constitution,” he said.
“Any decision must follow proper discussion. Until then, no official decision can be made.”
Akmal added that he had vacated his office out of respect for the institution.
He expressed hope that the Yang di-Pertua Negeri will formally accept his resignation once the matter is discussed.
Yesterday, Rauf confirmed that Akmal remained the Rural Development, Agriculture and Food Security exco member.
He noted that although the resignation letter had been submitted, the issue had not been raised with the Yang di-Pertua Negeri.
“Whether it was accepted or rejected, no final decision had been made,” Rauf said.
“However, as of that day, he was still performing his duties as an exco member.”
On January 15, Akmal announced his resignation during his policy speech at the Umno Youth general assembly.
He said the decision was driven by his commitment to fight against DAP and to represent the voice of the grassroots.
