Umno Youth chief Muhamad Akmal Saleh has confirmed he will face court proceedings this Friday.
In a statement posted on his Facebook page, Akmal said he was contacted by police and informed that he will be charged under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code.
“However, I am currently performing the umrah in Mecca,” he added. “Therefore, I will shorten my umrah and return to face the charge this Friday at the Bukit Mertajam magistrate’s court at 8 a.m.”
Akmal declared he would not be deterred by the legal action, stating, “If this is the price I must pay to uphold the sovereignty of the nation, I will not back down even an inch.”
Section 505(b) of the Penal Code deals with making or circulating statements likely to cause public fear or alarm, with a penalty of up to two years in prison, a fine, or both.
Akmal concluded his post by asking for prayers and writing, “See you in court this Friday.”
The impending charge follows a recent gathering where Akmal led over 300 supporters in a 1.4km march with the national flag, the Jalur Gemilang, in Kepala Batas. The event was held in response to a controversy where a hardware store had displayed the flag upside down.
Early Saturday morning, Akmal had his statement recorded at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters regarding the assembly. His lawyer, Aizat Azam, confirmed that the Merlimau assemblyman fully cooperated and answered approximately 80 questions from the investigating officer.
