Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has directed the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) to collaborate with the Ministry of Education (MOE) to ensure core subjects such as Bahasa Melayu and History are prioritized across all educational institutions, including private and international schools.
The directive forms part of a proposed review of General Studies Subjects (MPU), presented by Higher Education Minister Zambry Abd Kadir during a recent meeting. “This review is crucial for enhancing the content, scope, and delivery of MPU to ensure it remains fresh, relevant, and effective in instilling national values and fostering patriotism,” Anwar stated in a recent social media post.
The proposed MPU review was developed through consultations with a wide range of stakeholders, including scholars, public universities, the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA), the Higher Education Leadership Academy (AKEPT), the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), the Defence Ministry, and other agencies. These discussions focused on evaluating the effectiveness of MPU and charting a new direction for its implementation.
Anwar emphasized that the review’s scope will extend beyond public and private universities to include all training institutions nationwide. He further noted that the proposal will be tabled before the Cabinet to strengthen national awareness, with the goal of nurturing a generation that is knowledgeable, compassionate, and deeply patriotic.
