Terengganu executive councillor Hanafiah Mat has pleaded not guilty to two charges of abuse of power at the Kuala Terengganu Sessions Court.
Charges linked to family appointments
Hanafiah, who holds the infrastructure, utilities and rural development portfolio, is accused of abusing his position to secure jobs for his two sons in state government-owned subsidiaries.
The first charge alleges that on August 15, 2020, as executive councillor and chairman of Pangkalan Bekalan Kemaman Sdn Bhd, he obtained gratification by directing the appointment of his son Najmi Hanafiah.
The second charge claims he committed a similar offence on June 18, 2020, to obtain gratification for his other son, Ahmad Kamil Hanafiah.
Both alleged offences took place at EPIC Bhd’s office on Level 2, Annexe Building, Pangkalan Bekalan Kemaman, Teluk Kalong, Kemaman.
Court proceedings and bail conditions
The charges were brought under Section 23(1) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 and are punishable under Section 24(1) of the same Act.
