The youth wing of the political party Bersatu will join its UMNO counterpart in Kepala Batas, Penang, on Thursday to verify that a giant Malaysian flag, or Jalur Gemilang, has been displayed “correctly” as promised by DAP.
In a statement, Bersatu Youth chief Hilman Idham announced the decision, emphasizing the wing’s commitment to defending Malaysia’s sovereignty and dignity. “The youth must lead the charge for unity—the Jalur Gemilang is our shared pride,” he said. “In the spirit of solidarity that transcends party politics, Bersatu Youth will join forces with UMNO Youth in Kepala Batas, Penang, on August 14.”
This development follows an earlier announcement by UMNO Youth chief Dr. Akmal Saleh, who had called off a planned protest and a “class” he intended to hold for the hardware store owner accused of flying the national flag upside down. Dr. Akmal had previously threatened to protest at the shop if the owner was not charged by Thursday, stating he would personally “teach this ‘Ah Pek’ (uncle) how to put up a flag properly.”
In response, DAP pledged to sponsor a new giant Jalur Gemilang for the store and deploy party members to distribute 831 flags if anyone attempted to cause a disturbance. This move was made to counter what DAP described as threats from certain groups to stage a protest at the store.
Separately, Terengganu UMNO Youth apologized for an error in a graphic of the Jalur Gemilang that was posted on its social media. The wing attributed the mistake to an “unintentional mistake by the graphic designer.” Dr. Akmal acknowledged the error and called on the police to take action, despite the individual responsible being from his own party.
