Gerakan president Dominic Lau has appealed to all Perikatan Nasional component parties to set aside differences and unite, especially amid the ongoing dispute over the coalition’s chairmanship.
He said unity is vital if PN hopes to form the federal government following the 16th general election.
Welcoming PAS remarks on coalition unity
Dominic Lau, who serves as PN deputy chairman, welcomed yesterday’s statement by PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang, the Marang MP, who spoke about the importance of reinforcing unity within PN.
He stressed that the coalition’s real strength lies in its four component parties standing firmly together as one.
“Mutual understanding in PN is crucial to strengthening the coalition,” he said in a statement.
“Now is not the time for internal disputes. Instead, we need to focus on closing ranks, strengthening our machinery, coordinating our strategies, and winning the confidence of the people.”
Only unity can offer a credible alternative
Dominic Lau added that Gerakan firmly believes only through genuine unity among all PN parties can the coalition present itself as a viable alternative to the Madani government in GE16.
He said this would allow PN to offer Malaysians a stable and responsible government that prioritises the people’s well-being.
Roots of the current chairmanship tensions
Tensions between PAS and Bersatu escalated after Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin claimed the parties had agreed, during a meeting at his house, to abolish the PN chairman’s post.
PAS, which had earlier expressed interest in the chairmanship, countered that no such discussion took place.
Last night, PAS assistant secretary-general Syahir Sulaiman proposed a “ceasefire” between the two parties and called for an urgent meeting of the PN Supreme Council.
The Supreme Council is expected to formally confirm Muhyiddin’s resignation as coalition chairman effective Jan 1 and appoint his successor.
