PAS President and Marang MP Abdul Hadi Awang expressed his gratitude for the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s candid address regarding administrative weaknesses, specifically the failure to curb the cancer of corruption.
Debating the Royal Address in the Dewan Rakyat, Hadi attributed the nation’s struggle with graft to a failure in human development and religious awareness.
He used a sharp analogy of two monkeys fighting over a banana who seek a baboon’s help to mediate. In the end, the baboon eats the entire fruit under the guise of “balancing” the pieces, leaving the monkeys with only the skin.
“Budgets are approved and sufficient every year, but during execution, the funds are lacking. This is because the money is slashed by ‘monkeys’ guarding these ‘roadblocks’ mid-way,” Hadi thundered.
He alleged that commissions of 5% to 10% taken at various stages lead to failed hospitals, stalled infrastructure, and the procurement of second-hand military hardware.
Hadi also criticized what he termed “selective enforcement,” claiming that those who support the government are shielded from prosecution while others are targeted.
Hadi described the current administration as a “leaky umbrella” that protects wrongdoers. He emphasized that in Islam, corruption is a major sin affecting the masses, and performing religious pilgrimages (Umrah) repeatedly cannot erase the sin without legal accountability and genuine repentance.
