For weary travellers arriving at their hotel after a long journey, few things are as welcoming as a clean, comfortable room. However, before unpacking your bags and settling in, taking a few moments to inspect your room can ensure a safer, smoother, and more pleasant stay.
Hospitality experts share practical advice on what to check—from safety features to cleanliness—to avoid surprises and enhance your hotel experience.
Prioritise Safety First
Safety should always come first when you step into a hotel room. Afi Anifrani, executive housekeeper at Thompson Savannah, advises starting with the basics: “Ensure the door closes and locks securely. If you plan to use the in-room safe, confirm it’s working properly.”
Mary D’Argenis-Fernandez, founder and CEO of MDA Hospitality, suggests checking any adjoining doors to ensure they are locked. She also recommends inspecting the peephole to confirm it has a cover that fully closes for privacy. “Take a moment to review the emergency exit map on the back of the door and locate the nearest stairwells in case of an emergency,” she adds. These simple steps can provide peace of mind, especially for solo travellers or those staying in unfamiliar destinations.
Inspect Room Functionality
Once safety is confirmed, ensure the room’s essential features are in working order. Anifrani recommends testing “outlets, the thermostat, TV, bathroom fixtures, and the coffee maker” to avoid inconvenience later. Denise Perry, executive housekeeper at the Brenton Hotel in Newport, Rhode Island, suggests checking light switches and clocks as well.
To get a clear view of the room, Perry advises opening curtains or shades to let in natural light. “This helps you spot anything that might need attention,” she says. Addressing issues like a faulty air-conditioner or a broken coffee maker early can save you the hassle of switching rooms after unpacking.
Focus on Cleanliness
High-touch surfaces in hotel rooms, such as remote controls, thermostats, and light switches, are cleaned daily, according to Anifrani. However, for extra caution, some guests prefer to take matters into their own hands. Laura Asilis, a Travel+Leisure A-List advisor, always wipes down key areas, even in luxury hotels. “The TV remote is often the dirtiest item in a room—a quick wipe with a disinfecting cloth makes a big difference,” she says. She also cleans faucet handles and the toilet flush button, which may not always receive thorough attention.
For added comfort, Asilis suggests placing a shawl or scarf over fabric furniture like couches or armchairs before sitting. This small step can provide reassurance, particularly for those mindful of hygiene.
Settle In with Confidence
Checking the room thoroughly before unpacking can prevent the inconvenience of relocating later. Once you’re satisfied with the safety, functionality, and cleanliness, it’s time to make the space your own. D’Argenis-Fernandez recommends activating any digital key offered by the hotel on your phone for easy access. She also suggests adjusting the thermostat to your preferred temperature and organising the bathroom counter to suit your needs.
By taking these simple yet effective steps, you can ensure your hotel stay is comfortable and stress-free from the moment you arrive. A little preparation goes a long way in creating a home-away-from-home experience that Malaysians, who value both practicality and comfort, will appreciate.
