Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com has announced plans to expand its operations in Malaysia, with a focus on strengthening its logistics sector and increasing the export of Malaysian products to China, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim revealed on Tuesday.
Following a meeting with JD.com’s representative at the China World Summit Wing Hotel, Anwar highlighted the company’s commitment to leveraging Malaysia’s strategic location to position the country as a regional logistics hub.
“I welcome JD.com’s decision to expand its Malaysian operations, particularly in logistics, which will create more job opportunities for Malaysians,” he told Malaysian media after a series of engagements with Chinese industry leaders. “Additionally, JD.com plans to procure more Malaysian products for marketing in China.”
JD.com, which serves over 580 million shoppers, already operates in Malaysia through its JD Global Sales division, facilitating cross-border e-commerce for international consumers. The company’s chief executive officer of JD Logistics, Hu Wei, who also serves on its Strategy Executive Committee, met with Anwar for approximately 30 minutes during the discussions.
Anwar also engaged with the China Semiconductor Industry Association (CSIA), representing over 1,400 semiconductor firms. Represented by CSIA IC Design Branch chairman Wei Shaojun and executive Wan Junjie, the association discussed Malaysia’s ambitions under the National Semiconductor Strategy (NSS) to become a key player in the global semiconductor industry.
As part of his four-day working visit to China, Anwar is scheduled to attend the Malaysia-China Economic and Business Dialogue later today, bringing together 180 Chinese business leaders from various sectors to further strengthen bilateral economic ties.
