Veteran politician Khairy Jamaluddin plans to travel to Sabah to support Barisan Nasional (BN) candidates in the 17th Sabah General Election, despite uncertainty over his Umno reinstatement.
The former Health Minister, popularly known as KJ, revealed his Sabah trip follows invitations from old Umno and BN youth colleagues.
“Yes, I will go. I have received an invitation and request from old friends who were with me in UMNO Youth before,” he told reporters after joining the 2025 Malaysian Family Run today.
Khairy, a former Umno Youth chief and three-term Rembau MP, was expelled from Umno in January 2023 for alleged party discipline breach.
He remains known for his eloquent and measured speaking style, delivering mature insights with persuasive clarity.
Also present at the charity run was former ninth Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who launched the event.
On his potential Umno return, Khairy kept it short: “Not yet, I have not received any (notification),” he said, as quoted by Berita Harian.
Earlier reports indicated Khairy might rejoin Umno after gaining approval from the party’s top leadership, including Umno President Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Sources said the Deputy Prime Minister conveyed this approval to Khairy during a wedding on Oct 26 for the daughter of Umno Perlis liaison chief Rozabil Abdul Rahman.
Khairy is expected to aid the Umno and BN campaign in Sabah, where some candidates are his former political contemporaries.
At the Family Run, Ismail Sabri noted over 3,000 participants joined to raise funds for the Malaysian Family Foundation.
The funds will help children orphaned by COVID-19 pursue university education.
