Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has accused UMNO of betraying the struggle of Malaysia’s forefathers for independence by supporting what he described as an agreement that places the nation under US control.
In a Facebook post titled “Wahai ahli UMNO” (Oh UMNO members), Mahathir alleged that the party has abandoned its principles of defending race, religion, and nation, and has instead prioritised personal gain.
“You have betrayed the struggle of your parents and grandparents for independence,” he wrote. “By agreeing to a deal that puts Malaysia under American influence, you have sold out your country. Your descendants will curse your actions.”
Mahathir claimed the government’s agreement with the United States not only involved purchasing nearly RM1 trillion worth of American goods but also included aligning Malaysia’s foreign policy with that of Washington.
“Malaysia’s courage is gone. Everything is now determined by the United States,” he said.
He accused UMNO of becoming “traitors to the Malay race,” saying its leaders and MPs now fight only for self-interest.
“Your betrayal will be recorded in the nation’s history,” Mahathir warned.
The post has sparked widespread reactions online, with some linking his comments to the recently announced Malaysia-US Comprehensive Strategic Agreement.
