Mahdzir Khalid has questioned the claim made by Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor regarding a former Kuala Nerang representative who allegedly owns 300 acres of land.
He described the allegation as baseless and argued that it unfairly tarnished the image of Umno.
The former Padang Terap member of parliament noted that the claim has caused confusion because the individual being referred to was not clearly identified. He pointed out that several former representatives from Kuala Nerang are still alive, including himself, Ghazali, Badrul Hisham, Syed Razak, Syed Sobri, Abdul Latif Mat Saman, and Kama Noriah.
Mahdzir, who also serves as the Kedah Umno liaison committee chairman, emphasized that such accusations should not be made in general terms. He stated that vague remarks create a negative perception of all former representatives who have served the constituency.
Inappropriate remarks during Ramadan
The Kedah Umno chairman further criticized the timing of the remarks, noting they were inappropriate for the month of Ramadan. He warned that such statements could lead to slander and widespread misunderstanding among the public.
He urged the menteri besar to be clear if he intended to make an accusation, rather than making broad statements that implicate everyone. Mahdzir remarked that during the fasting month, there is no need to speak ill of others, adding that the statement had gone too far.
Viral video sparks controversy
The issue surfaced after a video clip of Muhammad Sanusi’s speech during a recent Aidilfitri contribution handover ceremony for the poor at Wisma Darul Aman went viral on social media. In the recording, the menteri besar alleged that a former representative possessed 300 acres of land in Kuala Nerang.
In the video, the menteri besar also questioned the source of the land, asking whether it had been inherited or obtained through other means. He further claimed that the individual in question had constructed a large service centre on the vast tract of land within the area.
