Malaysia’s Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil revealed he has received threatening emails demanding US$100,000 to prevent the release of fabricated, AI-generated sex videos. The government spokesperson noted that the email he received mirrored those sent to other politicians in recent days, containing identical wording and fake screenshots, likely originating from the same email address.
Fahmi emphasized that the government views these incidents with utmost seriousness and will not tolerate the misuse of technology and communication networks to intimidate or deceive the public. “Every effort will be made to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice to protect public safety,” he stated in a Facebook post.
The minister identified other affected politicians, including Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli, Subang MP Wong Chen, Sungai Petani MP Dr. Taufiq Johari, Hang Tuah Jaya MP Adam Adli, Kota Kinabalu MP Chan Foong Hin, Kota Anggerik assemblyman Najwan Halimi, Seri Setia assemblyman Fahmi Ngah, Kulim assemblyman Wong Chia Zen, and Senator Manolan Mohamad.
Fahmi highlighted that such threatening communications constitute an offense under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, punishable by a fine of up to RM500,000, imprisonment for up to two years, or both. Additionally, the incidents may be investigated for criminal intimidation under Section 503 of the Penal Code, which carries a potential two-year prison sentence, a fine, or both.
In a separate statement, Subang MP Wong Chen disclosed that his office received an email on Friday containing a menacing message, a screenshot of a purported sex video with his face digitally superimposed, and a QR code demanding US$100,000. Wong, after discussing the matter with Rafizi Ramli, noted a striking similarity between their emails. “Apart from our faces, the photos are identical—down to the fold of the pillows and blanket, the room, the bed, and the naked figure in the image,” he said. “Clearly, the same individual attempted to extort both of us, but separately.”
