Police have dismantled an online sex scam syndicate offering non-existent services following the arrest of two Malaysians and 13 Chinese nationals at Kampung Lapan in Tengkera.
Melaka Tengah police chief Christopher Patit stated that the suspects, aged between 26 and 49, were detained at approximately 6pm last Thursday.
The group is believed to have been operating a call centre involved in online fraud activities. Their operations specifically targeted victims in Taiwan by offering bogus sexual services through digital platforms.
Foreign nationals on tourist passes
Investigations revealed that the 13 Chinese nationals, which included one woman, had entered Malaysia using tourist passes. They had reportedly been based in Melaka since early March.
During the raid, police seized an array of equipment believed to have been used to facilitate the scam. The seized items included 13 computers, 40 mobile phones, and two passports, with the total value of the equipment estimated at RM85,000.
All suspects have been remanded for four days starting yesterday to assist with ongoing investigations. The case is being handled under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, as well as Sections 6(1)(c) and 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.
Public advised to remain vigilant
Following the successful operation, police have urged the public to remain cautious and vigilant regarding any services offered through online channels.
Authorities emphasized that the rise of digital call centres requires heightened public awareness to avoid falling victim to non-existent service traps.
