Former prime minister Najib Razak has filed a notice of appeal against his conviction and sentence in the 1MDB case. His lawyer Farhan Shafee confirmed the filing at the Court of Appeal yesterday evening. The move follows last week’s High Court ruling.
High Court Conviction Details
The High Court found Najib guilty on four counts of abuse of power. He also faced 21 counts of money laundering tied to RM2.28 billion in 1MDB funds. These involved deposits into his AmBank accounts from February 2011 to December 2014.
Justice Collin Lawrence Sequerah imposed 15 years’ imprisonment on each abuse of power charge. The sentences will run concurrently. He also fined Najib RM13.387 billion.
Money Laundering Penalties
For the 21 money laundering charges, Sequerah sentenced Najib to five years’ imprisonment per count. These terms will also run concurrently. The judge ordered payment of a recoverable RM2.08 billion.
The judge set Najib’s 1MDB jail term to start in 2028. This follows completion of his six-year sentence in the SRC International case. The appeal now heads to the Court of Appeal.
