National unity minister Aaron Ago Dagang has called on police to take firm and decisive action against individuals involved in three recent incidents that pose a threat to Malaysia’s racial and religious harmony.
He expressed serious concern over the events, which include the alleged arson attack on three vehicles owned by social activist Cikgu Chandra, a man’s reported act of stepping on and damaging a Trishul – a sacred symbol in Hinduism – and the alleged assault on controversial preacher Zamri Vinoth.
Zero tolerance for provocation
“Any form of violence, religious provocation, hatred or extreme action that touches on racial and religious sensitivities is completely unacceptable in a multiracial and multi-religious country like Malaysia,” Aaron said in a statement today.
He stressed that national harmony cannot be allowed to suffer because of the irresponsible actions of a few.
Aaron urged thorough police investigations and insisted that authorities must deal with the perpetrators strictly according to the law.
“Action against extremist groups attempting to undermine national security must be taken without compromise,” he added.
Appeal for calm and restraint
The minister appealed to the public to avoid reacting emotionally or spreading unverified speculation, especially on social media, when dealing with sensitive race and religion matters.
“Any differences of opinion must be addressed through the proper channels and within the framework of the law,” he said.
He reminded everyone that Malaysia is founded on principles of unity, mutual respect, and understanding among different religions and cultures – values that every citizen must protect.
“The ministry will continue to work closely with security agencies, community leaders, and interfaith organisations to ensure that the country’s harmony, peace, and stability are preserved,” Aaron concluded.
