Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming confirmed that the Urban Renewal Act (URA) Bill will be tabled for its second reading in Parliament tomorrow, dismissing the opposition’s resistance as “sentiment-driven and destructive politics.”
“It will be tabled tomorrow,” he told reporters briefly after receiving a memorandum of support from about 50 Klang Valley residents at the entrance of Parliament today.
“We want constructive politics. What matters is that the people are with us,” Nga said.
The residents, mostly from housing estates over 30 years old, expressed hope that the URA would facilitate redevelopment and improve their living conditions. Deputy Minister Aiman Athirah Sabu, Ipoh Timor MP Howard Lee, Hulu Langat MP Mohd Sany Hamzan, and Sri Gading MP Aminolhuda Hassan were also present.
In contrast, more than 100 individuals had gathered at Parliament yesterday to submit a memorandum opposing the bill. Opposition chief whip Takiyuddin Hassan said MPs were prepared to face suspension from parliamentary sittings for up to six months in their bid to block the URA.
“We will fight it to the end. This bill must be withdrawn and not debated,” he said.
