Pahang MCA Youth chief Wong Siew Mun has been summoned by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, following a TikTok video in which she criticised the Urban Renewal Bill (URA).
Wong said she was informed around 10 pm yesterday to report to the MCMC office in Cyberjaya or the nearest police station by 11.30 am today.
“I watched my video repeatedly. What did I say? What sensitivity did I touch that I needed to attend MCMC at such short notice?” she asked during a press conference outside the MCMC office today.
She pointed out that leaders from both sides of the political divide as well as the Bar Council had also voiced concerns about the bill.
She noted that BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, MCA president Wee Ka Siong, as well as MPs from PKR and DAP had all raised issues with the proposed law.
“Why am I the only one summoned? Will the others also be called up?” she asked.
Zahid previously warned about the wide scope of executive powers and threshold levels under the bill, while Wee demanded explanations on the rationale for setting different consent rates by building age. The Bar Council also argued that the thresholds were too low and should be raised to at least 85% or 90%, with independent verification.
The bill initially required 80% consent for buildings under 30 years old, 75% for older ones, and 51% for abandoned or unsafe structures. On Thursday, Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming announced that all projects under the URA would now uniformly require 80% owner consent, regardless of building age.
