Mass resignations by several Bersatu leaders from their Perikatan Nasional (PN) posts are part of efforts to strengthen the coalition, according to a PAS leader.
PAS central committee member Awang Hashim dismissed suggestions that these moves indicate division or risk of collapse.
He explained that the leaders resigned because they were appointed by Muhyiddin Yassin as PN chairman.
No Split in PN
Awang Hashim told FMT that the developments actually signal PN is being fortified.
He stressed that no further splitting is occurring.
The Pendang MP emphasised that PAS and Bersatu remain very close despite organisational issues.
Restructuring for Strength
These structural problems will be addressed by PN’s top leadership.
Awang said the ongoing restructuring aims to make the coalition stronger.
His comments counter perceptions of turmoil within PN.
Background to Resignations
Muhyiddin Yassin announced today that he will step down as PN chairman on January 1.
The decision follows the political crisis in Perlis, where Bersatu took over the menteri besar post from PAS.
PN secretary-general Azmin Ali subsequently resigned from his coalition role and as Selangor PN chief.
More Leaders Step Down
Others who resigned include Johor PN chairman Dr Sahruddin Jamal.
Perak PN chief Ahmad Faizal Azumu and Negeri Sembilan PN chief Hanifah Abu Baker also stepped down from their posts.
These announcements came in the wake of Muhyiddin’s decision.
Perlis Crisis Recap
In the past week, several PAS leaders accused Bersatu of weakness and betrayal.
They criticised Bersatu for not acting against five assemblymen who withdrew support from former Perlis menteri besar Shukri Ramli.
Three PAS assemblymen who retracted support had their party memberships terminated, with seats declared vacant.
New Menteri Besar
Bersatu’s Kuala Perlis assemblyman Abu Bakar Hamzah succeeded Shukri as menteri besar.
This leadership change intensified discussions within the coalition.
The events have prompted broader organisational reflections in PN.
