PKR secretary-general Fuziah Salleh insists the party’s single seat in the 2025 Sabah election does not signal an impending wipeout.
Instead, she views the result as a key opportunity to recalibrate strategy and gauge voter sentiment on the ground.
Sabahans largely backed local parties like Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) and Warisan in the polls.
Benchmark for GE16 Strategy
Fuziah noted that Sabah voters prefer local parties aligned with the federal government.
This outcome provides PKR with a vital benchmark ahead of the 16th general election (GE16).
“Sabahans want local parties, but they also want local parties that are aligned with the federal government,” she told FMT.
Confidence amid Local Challenges
The senator expressed firm confidence that Sabah’s political landscape will not undermine PKR’s broader standing.
PKR remains ready to reassess its state-level approach to stay relevant in shifting dynamics.
Pakatan Harapan contested 22 of the 73 seats in November’s Sabah election, securing just one.
PKR’s Jamawi Jaafar won the Melalap seat.
GRS claimed 29 seats and formed the state government with support from PH, Barisan Nasional, Upko, and five independents.
Strong Peninsula Trends
In contrast, Fuziah highlighted positive shifts on the peninsula.
PKR surveys show support for president and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim rising 5% to 73% by year-end.
Public satisfaction with government performance also remains high.
The real task, she said, lies in converting this backing into votes for GE16.
