Any proposal to abolish or amend the Perikatan Nasional chairman’s post must be decided through consensus among all component parties, as the position is clearly stated in the coalition’s constitution.
PN election director Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor made this point after launching the state-level 1 Month 1 Sport programme at Wisma Darul Aman in Alor Star.
He explained that Article 7 of the PN constitution establishes a Presidential Council made up of party presidents to serve as an advisory and policy-guiding body, while the PN chairman leads the Supreme Council.
“The Presidential Council and the PN chairman are two separate entities. One cannot simply remove the other,” Sanusi said.
“Both are firmly set out in the constitution.”
No unilateral decisions allowed
Sanusi stressed that changes cannot be made unilaterally.
“Component parties must reach agreement. No single party can decide alone,” he added.
“To issue any statement or take any step, one must refer to the constitution. If we stick to the constitution, there will be no room for dispute.”
He acknowledged that different interpretations of the constitution may arise but insisted such matters should be handled by legal experts.
“Those without legal expertise should stay out of it. Leave these issues to the professionals. Even I am not a legal expert, so let the experts give their view. That is how things should be done,” he said.
Proposal sparks mixed reactions in coalition
The remarks come after reports that Muhyiddin Yassin had suggested abolishing the PN chairman position as part of a restructuring effort amid recent internal disagreements over leadership roles.
In a letter reportedly sent to leaders of PAS, Gerakan, and the Malaysian Indian People’s Party, Muhyiddin said Bersatu and PAS had agreed to restructure PN.
The proposed changes would see a Presidential Council led by Bersatu and an Executive Council chaired by PAS.
The suggestion has drawn varied responses within the coalition.
