Perikatan Nasional is set to announce the name of its new opposition leader by the end of this month. Coalition chairman Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar confirmed that the decision was reached during a supreme council meeting held today.
The meeting primarily focused on filling several key leadership vacancies within the coalition. The timing of this announcement follows earlier reports of deliberations within the supreme council regarding the strategic direction of the opposition bloc.
Major changes in secretariat and information
A significant leadership reshuffle was confirmed today, with Takiyuddin Hassan appointed as the new secretary general of Perikatan Nasional. He replaces Azmin Ali, who resigned from the post effective January 1.
Azmin Ali’s resignation coincided with the departure of Muhyiddin Yassin as the coalition’s chairman. Despite leaving the secretary general post, Azmin Ali has been appointed as a deputy secretary general. He will serve alongside Gerakan secretary general Wong Chia Zhen and Malaysian Indian People’s Party vice president K Sivakumar.
The coalition has also designated senior PAS leader Annuar Musa as the new information chief. Additionally, Bersatu vice president Radzi Jidin has been appointed as the election director, taking over the portfolio from Sanusi Nor.
Reshuffle of treasury and wing leadership
Sanusi Nor, who serves as the Kedah menteri besar, has transitioned into the role of treasurer general for the coalition. Meanwhile, the leadership of the coalition’s women’s wing has also seen a change.
Bersatu acting Wanita chief Nolee Ashilin Radzi has taken over the position of Perikatan Nasional Wanita chief from Mas Ermieyati Samsudin. These appointments mark a comprehensive restructuring of the coalition’s executive line up.
The supreme council meeting took place amid previous reports of internal discussions regarding the opposition leader post and speculation concerning the political landscape.
