The Perikatan Nasional Supreme Council meeting planned for January 29 has been cancelled, with the presidents of the coalition’s four component parties now scheduled to meet at Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin’s home instead.
Preliminary Talks Among Party Leaders
The gathering of the party chiefs is described as a preliminary session to chart the way forward before the full Supreme Council convenes.
The main agenda will be to formally accept Muhyiddin’s resignation as PN chairman, effective January 1, and to appoint his successor.
Malaysian Indian People’s Party president P Punithan explained that the change followed earlier discussions between PAS and Bersatu on the coalition’s future direction.
“Based on those talks between PAS and Bersatu, Muhyiddin sent a letter to all presidents within PN,” Punithan told FMT.
Agreement Reached on Key Issues
Punithan said the PAS-Bersatu meeting produced agreement on several important matters, including proposed changes to PN’s constitution and leadership structures.
These cover the roles of the presidential council and the Supreme Council.
Muhyiddin personally briefed both Punithan and Gerakan president Dominic Lau on the outcomes of those discussions.
Punithan confirmed that both MIPP and Gerakan fully support the agreed direction.
“Gerakan and MIPP have agreed on the way forward regarding the constitutional amendments, the presidential council and the Supreme Council,” he said.
Supreme Council Meeting Delayed
He added that the PN Supreme Council meeting will only be called once consensus is reached among the component party presidents.
“Once we have decided on the way forward, then we will call for a PN Supreme Council meeting,” Punithan explained.
The now-cancelled Supreme Council session had been set for this Thursday.
PN deputy secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan clarified that invitations were sent only to those who still hold positions in the coalition.
Muhyiddin, Azmin Ali and Radzi Jidin were therefore not invited, having resigned from their coalition roles.
A leader aligned with Muhyiddin argued that he should still have been included, since he remains president of a component party and, by convention, holds the position of PN deputy chairman.
