Bersatu vice-president Radzi Jidin has been appointed the new Melaka Bersatu chief with immediate effect, following the resignation of Rahim Thamby Chik from the position.
Leadership transition in Melaka
Bersatu secretary-general Azmin Ali announced the appointment in a statement, praising Radzi for his experience and leadership qualities.
He said Radzi possesses the ability to strengthen the party and develop new leaders who are committed to Bersatu’s ideals and struggle.
Radzi will be tasked with restructuring the leadership of Bersatu divisions in Melaka, Azmin added.
Resignation amid party tensions
Rahim, a former Melaka chief minister from 1982 to 1994, announced yesterday that he was stepping down as Melaka Bersatu chief.
He is also relinquishing his position as a member of the Bersatu Supreme Council, although he remains a party member.
Rahim cited recent developments at the central level and the aspirations of grassroots members as reasons for his decision to resign from party posts.
He further announced mass resignations from the divisional leaderships of Bersatu’s Masjid Tanah, Hang Tuah Jaya, Tangga Batu, Alor Gajah and Jasin divisions.
Preparing for state election
The leadership change comes amid ongoing tensions within Bersatu, following the sacking of former deputy president Hamzah Zainudin and 16 MPs.
Azmin expressed confidence that the newly-formed leadership team could continue the people’s struggle and build strength ahead of the Melaka state election expected later this year.
