A Selangor Bersatu leader has joined growing calls for deputy president Hamzah Zainudin to step down or face disciplinary action for allegedly helping fuel the current turmoil within the party.
Complaints lodged over alleged attacks
Rafiq Abdullah, Selangor Bersatu deputy chairman, said several complaints have already been submitted to the party’s disciplinary board concerning Hamzah’s supposed involvement in coordinated attacks against president Muhyiddin Yassin.
“These efforts are meant to oust the president. It has been going on for far too long and we are fed up,” Rafiq told FMT.
“For the sake of harmony within the party, I think it is time for the disciplinary board to take action.”
His remarks follow earlier suggestions from Bersatu Supreme Council member Yunus Nurdin that Muhyiddin should resign to allow Hamzah to assume the presidency.
Bersatu information chief Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz has rejected those calls and countered that Hamzah should be the one to resign, citing his poor performance as Sabah election director during the November state polls where the party was wiped out.
Questions over ceasefire compliance
Rafiq questioned why Hamzah has failed to rein in his supporters despite the Supreme Council’s earlier call for a ceasefire, which all sides had agreed to.
“The Supreme Council called for a ceasefire, and everyone agreed. But Hamzah’s men persist with their attacks,” he said.
“And the deputy president has yet to issue a statement calling for such attacks to be halted.”
Sources indicate that Bersatu’s internal difficulties began after Hamzah’s appointment as opposition leader.
Recent disciplinary measures
The party recently took action against several figures believed to be aligned with Hamzah.
Tasek Gelugor MP Wan Saiful Wan Jan and Indera Mahkota MP Saifuddin Abdullah were sacked, while Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal was suspended.
It was previously rumoured that the Supreme Council was considering removing Hamzah, though several leaders later denied the claim.
