The Selangor government has agreed to temporarily cancel plans for a pig farming project in Bukit Tagar and will look for alternative locations following public objections and a proposal by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari said the decision had already been made at a state executive council meeting to instruct the relevant exco to explore other suitable areas due to strong resistance in Bukit Tagar.
He said the state government recognised the intensity of objections even before Anwar raised the matter and decided the project should be put on hold first.
Amirudin added that no alternative sites have been finalised and therefore no details will be announced at this stage.
He acknowledged that the project had been made public too early, triggering widespread debate and misconceptions that it was already set to proceed.
He said proper engagement with industry players should have taken place before any public announcement was made.
Anwar had earlier said he would discuss with Amirudin the need to cancel the large-scale pig farming project in Bukit Tagar for the time being.
The prime minister said the Cabinet was concerned about environmental factors as well as anxiety among residents of different communities near the area.
Amirudin confirmed Anwar conveyed the suggestion via a phone call while he was overseas and that the state government accepted it positively.
He stressed that the project was never intended to be a massive development, adding that claims of it being “mega” were exaggerated.
