SoftBank is in discussions to invest up to an additional US$30 billion in OpenAI as part of a new funding round, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters.
The funding round could raise as much as US$100 billion, potentially valuing the ChatGPT maker at around US$830 billion.
The Wall Street Journal first reported the talks, which were later confirmed by Reuters through a knowledgeable source.
SoftBank and OpenAI have not yet responded to requests for comment on the reported negotiations.
Last year, SoftBank, led by Masayoshi Son, completed a massive US$41 billion investment in OpenAI, one of the largest private funding rounds ever recorded.
That deal gave the Japanese conglomerate an estimated 11 percent stake in the artificial intelligence company.
Analysts say further investment would significantly strengthen OpenAI’s ability to expand computing infrastructure, develop advanced models and scale globally, while highlighting strong investor confidence in generative AI.
