Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and South Korean President Lee Jae-myung concluded their summit in Nara yesterday with an unexpected musical collaboration.
The two leaders took to the drums to perform global K-pop hits, including BTS’s “Dynamite” and “Golden” from the Netflix hit series Kpop Demon Hunters.
Takaichi, a former band drummer during her student days, prepared the “surprise event” to fulfill a wish expressed by Lee during her visit to Seoul last October.
Despite only having 10 minutes of instruction from Takaichi, President Lee managed to keep the beat and even added his own improvisations.
“Although our tempos were a bit different, we both tried to match the rhythm together. We will create a future-oriented relationship with one heart,” Lee posted on X this morning, describing the experience as the fulfillment of a childhood dream.
The symbolic session took place at Horyuji Temple in Takaichi’s hometown of Nara. The leaders also exchanged gifts: Lee presented a South Korean-made drum set, while Takaichi gifted a Japanese-made outdoor watch.
Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to deepening security and economic ties amidst regional tensions.
