Bersatu Supreme Council member and Tasek Gelugor MP Wan Saiful Wan Jan claims that party secretary-general Azmin Ali is unfit to hold leadership positions in the party as long as the controversy surrounding an alleged explicit video remains unresolved.
Wan Saiful revealed that he was initially part of Azmin’s faction in Bersatu and even supported the former minister to become deputy president at the party’s July 2024 convention. When Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin later appointed Azmin as secretary-general, Wan Saiful said he accepted the decision at the time.
“Right after the convention, I received new information. This changed my view of Azmin. I told some colleagues that as long as this video issue is not settled, Azmin is not suitable as a Bersatu leader,” he told reporters today.
He stressed that political persecution must be defended, but if the issue involves moral misconduct, then it is not acceptable for a party like Bersatu.
“Other parties may tolerate it, but not Bersatu,” he said.
Wan Saiful admitted his relationship with Azmin has since worsened, adding he would not be surprised “if I become his next target.”
The controversy stems from viral clips in 2019 allegedly showing Azmin with another man at the Four Points hotel in Sandakan, Sabah. Former Santubong PKR Youth chief Haziq Aziz later released a video confession naming himself and Azmin as the individuals in the clips.
Azmin, then economic affairs minister and PKR deputy president, denied the allegations, calling them a plot to destroy his career.
CyberSecurity Malaysia confirmed the videos were authentic but said the poor resolution made it impossible to identify the faces involved. Then-attorney general Tommy Thomas added that forensic experts in the US reached the same conclusion, which led to the decision not to charge anyone linked to the videos.
