Controversial preacher Dr Zakir Naik has issued a letter of demand seeking RM10 million in damages from an India-based news portal and its journalist over a report suggesting he may be suffering from HIV.
The letter says the article tarnished his image and reputation by creating the impression that he had contracted HIV or engaged in activities that led to infection, and that it subjected him to ridicule.
The move comes about a month after the controversial preacher denied social media claims that he had been diagnosed with AIDS and was receiving treatment at a private hospital in the Klang Valley.
He dismissed the claims as “rubbish” and “fake news”, describing them as “hate speech” spread by irresponsible parties.
