Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh has announced that he will resign as a Melaka executive councillor, effective next week.
Akmal made the announcement at the Umno Youth general assembly, saying he had first discussed the matter with Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Melaka chief minister Ab Rauf Yusoh.
The Merlimau assemblyman said he was relinquishing his state government post to “fight DAP to the end”.
However, he said he would remain as Umno Youth chief to prove that he would never run away from the struggle to defend religion, race and the nation.
He added that the Umno Youth chief post was more important than a state exco position as it involved defending dignity, principles and the voice of the grassroots.
“I want to tell those who questioned who I am – I have dignity. Do you?”
“I also want to warn those who keep attacking me, the Umno president and the Melaka chief minister. When I am no longer an exco member, I will fight you to the end,” he said.
Akmal said this in his policy speech at the Umno Youth assembly held in conjunction with the Umno General Assembly 2025 at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur.
Previously, Melaka DAP criticised Akmal’s call for the party to leave the unity government, saying he had no authority to determine the direction of the government.
Melaka DAP chairman Khoo Poay Tiong said the remarks had sparked internal discussion but described the call as baseless and beyond Akmal’s authority.
DAP Socialist Youth (DAPSY) also urged Akmal to resign as Umno Youth chief after Zahid reiterated that Umno would remain in the unity government until the end of the term.
