Manchester United concluded their Premier League Summer Series campaign with a 2–2 draw against Everton on Sunday, delivering a subdued performance following a stronger display earlier in the week.
United supporters had been anticipating this fixture after manager Ruben Amorim hinted at Bryan Mbeumo’s debut. The Cameroonian winger started at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, partnering Bruno Fernandes in an advanced midfield role.
Everton nearly struck first when Jake O’Brien’s header from a free kick rattled the far post, forcing Altay Bayındır into early action. The warning sign highlighted United’s struggles to impose themselves compared to their convincing win over Bournemouth. At times, defensive communication between Leny Yoro and Amad Diallo faltered, a weakness Everton repeatedly exploited. Beto briefly thought he had scored in the 14th minute, but his effort was ruled offside.
Diallo redeemed himself moments later, winning a penalty in the 18th minute after being played through by Mbeumo. Fernandes converted confidently to give United the lead. Everton, however, remained disciplined and capitalized on United’s defensive lapses, equalizing through Iliman Ndiaye 20 minutes later.
At halftime, Amorim introduced Patrick Dorgu for Mbeumo and shifted Diogo Dalot to the right flank. The pattern of the first half persisted, with United struggling to control midfield tempo despite tactical adjustments.
Mason Mount restored United’s lead with a superb turn and finish past Jordan Pickford, a promising moment for the midfielder as he aims to regain form. Yet Everton drew level again six minutes later after a defensive mishap: Diallo’s attempted clearance ricocheted off Ayden Heaven and into United’s own net.
The match ended 2–2, closing out United’s Summer Series campaign on a frustrating note. Amorim will be concerned by his side’s lack of cohesion with just one preseason friendly remaining before the start of the Premier League season.
