Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has urged all political parties in Negri Sembilan to allow the current state political climate to cool down.
He emphasised that stability is crucial to avoid disrupting national efforts to restore the economy and safeguard public interests amidst global uncertainties.
Speaking to reporters after performing Friday prayers at Masjid Nurul Iman, the Prime Minister noted that the ongoing situation must be managed strictly in accordance with the state constitution and relevant legislation.
The Prime Minister reiterated that for the time being, the administration must follow the decree of the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negri Sembilan, who has directed the Menteri Besar to continue his duties in administering the state.
Prioritising economic recovery
Anwar Ibrahim stressed that while negotiations may take place, political leaders must not allow the situation to distract from core governance priorities.
He highlighted that the restoration of the economy remains the primary focus.
The remarks follow a period of political friction in the state. Recently, all 14 Barisan Nasional (BN) assemblymen in Negri Sembilan agreed to maintain their support for the unity government after a meeting with Umno president and Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
This decision came after earlier reports suggested a withdrawal of support for Menteri Besar Aminuddin Harun.
The Prime Minister confirmed that Aminuddin Harun remains in his post following the decree by Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir, with the matter being resolved through established legal channels.
Addressing customary and constitutional issues
The political tension initially escalated on April 27, when Negri Sembilan Umno and BN announced a withdrawal of support for the state government.
The move was linked to issues surrounding the Adat Perpatih customary system and its relationship with the constitutional framework.
Negri Sembilan Umno chief Jalaluddin Alias previously stated that the party leadership had taken note of developments involving the customary system’s interpretation.
He mentioned that BN executive councillors had not been initially briefed on certain discussions at the state level before the issue became a matter of public debate.
In response to these complexities, the Prime Minister called for patience and adherence to the law to ensure that the people’s welfare is not compromised by political disagreements.
