Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim sharply criticized detractors who have downplayed the Madani government’s achievements over the past three years, urging them to ground their arguments in facts rather than political rhetoric. Speaking during the tabling of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) in the Dewan Negara, Anwar, who also serves as finance minister, dismissed claims that the government has been inactive, pointing to significant reforms in combating corruption and enhancing governance.
Development Support for Opposition States
Anwar highlighted that opposition-ruled states have benefited from federal initiatives, citing early aid for Kedah’s five-season padi planting project and flood mitigation efforts in Kelantan as examples. He expressed frustration at the lack of acknowledgment from opposition leaders, particularly in Kedah, where the government allocated RM1 billion for the agricultural initiative. “They seem to close their eyes to these efforts and don’t say thank you even once,” he remarked.
In Kelantan, Anwar noted the completion of the first phase of flood mitigation projects and an agreement with Thailand to expand Sungai Golok. “I saw for myself that the first phase is done, yet some claim there have been no allocations,” he said, addressing misconceptions about federal support.
Rejection of Religiously Charged Criticism
Anwar strongly condemned critics who misuse religion, such as quoting the Quran, to discredit the government’s efforts. “To claim lies have been told and nothing has been done is a falsehood, especially when using religion,” he stated. He called for debates to be rooted in data and evidence, urging critics to avoid reckless attacks devoid of factual basis. “If you want to criticize or debate, it must be based on facts, not baseless accusations,” he emphasized.
Investments in Underdeveloped States
The prime minister outlined substantial allocations aimed at narrowing developmental gaps in six underdeveloped states: Perlis, Kedah, Terengganu, Kelantan, Sabah, and Sarawak. Kedah received RM2.13 billion, Kelantan RM3.12 billion, Terengganu RM1.84 billion, and Perlis RM0.61 billion for essential infrastructure, including roads, clean water, electricity, and internet access. “These efforts empower citizens to engage in economic activities and elevate their quality of life,” Anwar said.
13th Malaysia Plan Approval
On August 21, the Dewan Rakyat approved the 13MP, which includes a RM611 billion allocation for various development initiatives. Anwar reiterated the government’s commitment to equitable progress, emphasizing transparency and accountability in addressing regional disparities.
