Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim described his recent meeting with United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio as both constructive and beneficial, highlighting Washington’s openness to reviewing trade tariffs and its continued commitment to engagement with Malaysia and ASEAN.
“We raised the issue of tariffs imposed during former President Donald Trump’s administration,” Anwar told reporters following the meeting, held in Parliament today.
“In response, they clarified that the letter issued was a general notification. However, there remains a one-month window for further negotiations. They also acknowledged Malaysia’s strategic position as one of the United States’ key trading partners in the region and assured us that our concerns would be taken into consideration.”
On the Gaza Crisis
Addressing the humanitarian situation in Gaza, Anwar said he strongly urged the United States to support an immediate end to the violence.
“I emphasised that the ongoing massacre and atrocities must be halted without delay,” he said.
According to Anwar, Secretary Rubio appeared confident that efforts towards a ceasefire were progressing.
“He conveyed that the latest intelligence indicated serious negotiations underway. There is optimism that a ceasefire could soon be achieved, facilitating the delivery of urgent humanitarian aid to Palestine and Gaza.”
Anwar added that beyond Gaza, he also stressed the broader regional impact of conflicts and disruptions.
“We are not insulated from the consequences of foreign intrusion and instability. Such developments affect us directly as well,” he said.
Strengthening Bilateral and Regional Cooperation
The Prime Minister affirmed that the United States reiterated its desire to deepen its ties with Malaysia and the wider ASEAN community.
“The U.S. continues to view its relationship with Malaysia as vital and has expressed its intent to maintain—and indeed strengthen—its cooperation with ASEAN and its member states.”
Anwar reiterated Malaysia’s foreign policy stance, which prioritises multilateral engagement over bloc alignment.
“They understand our position clearly. We seek friendly relations and mutually beneficial trade with all nations. This is crucial, particularly in a time when some expect countries like ours to choose sides. We will not.”
He concluded by emphasising that while the United States remains an important economic partner, Malaysia is equally committed to enhancing its ties with China, ASEAN neighbours, and other global partners to safeguard national interests and ensure continued socio-economic benefits for the Malaysian people.
