The International Olympic Committee confirmed on Saturday that 10000 condoms have already been taken by athletes at the Milan-Cortina Winter Games, which started on February 6.
IOC spokesperson comments on high demand
IOC spokesperson Mark Adams shared the figure during the daily media briefing.
“10000 have been used, for 2800 athletes. Go figure, as they say,” Adams said with a smile.
Skier recalls similar scenes in Beijing
Mialitiana Clerc, a 24-year-old alpine skier from Madagascar, said she was not surprised by the rapid uptake.
She recalled seeing the same trend at the Beijing Winter Olympics four years ago.
“I am not so shocked because I know that at the Winter Olympic Games there are a lot of people using condoms because I saw it in Beijing already,” Clerc explained.
Clerc, who received an IOC scholarship and spoke at the briefing, added that boxes of free condoms were placed at the entrance of every building in the athletes’ village.
“There were a lot of boxes at the entrance of every building where we were staying and every day, everything had gone from the box,” she said.
Practical and social uses noted
Clerc pointed out that many athletes take the condoms not only for personal use but also to share with friends outside the Olympic bubble.
“I already know that a lot of people are using condoms, or giving them to their friends outside of the Olympics because it’s a kind of gift for them,” she noted.
The athletes’ village at Olympic Games has long carried a reputation as a place where competitors, fuelled by high energy and close proximity, often form romantic connections.
