North Korean leader Kim Jong Un promotes sister Kim Yo Jong to head party department
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has elevated his younger sister Kim Yo Jong to director of a key department in the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea.
Promotion announced at party plenary
State media reported the appointment on Tuesday following the first plenary meeting of the new Central Committee, held on Monday during the ongoing Ninth Party Congress.
The Korean Central News Agency said the meeting approved several high-level leadership changes.
Kim Yo Jong was named director of an unspecified department.
Position signals rise in seniority
In Tuesday’s edition of Rodong Sinmun, Kim topped the list of 11 alternate politburo members, placing her as the most senior figure in that group.
She was ranked 12th among the 17 department directors, a category that also includes full politburo members.
State media gave no details on which department she will now lead.
Previously, Kim Yo Jong had served as deputy director in the Propaganda and Agitation Department.
