PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang has issued a strong warning to party members in Perlis, cautioning against disobedience and disloyalty to both state and central leadership amid ongoing internal complaints and disputes.
In an open letter to Perlis PAS members, Abdul Hadi said the central leadership had thoroughly investigated allegations received after the party’s success in the 2022 state elections.
Investigations and Unsubstantiated Claims
Although no solid evidence was found to support claims of moral or administrative misconduct, the probe revealed that some members had openly voiced unhappiness with party decisions and the state leadership.
Abdul Hadi noted that certain individuals felt entitled to positions but were not selected, behaviour he described as un-Islamic and against party discipline.
He also condemned unethical lobbying efforts that aimed to weaken PAS from within, attempts to destabilise the Perlis state government, and disrespect shown towards the authority of the party-appointed state commissioner.
Acts of Betrayal and Loss of Power
The president further criticised a lack of resolve in resisting external pressures and defending the party’s cause, which led some to act outside official channels in ways that clashed with PAS’s stand against misconduct and corruption.
“Ultimately, they ended up supporting acts of betrayal that toppled the PAS government, handing power to others – friends who proved disloyal,” he said, in an apparent reference to Bersatu assuming the menteri besar post.
Abdul Hadi stressed that the Perlis PAS commissioner, chosen by the syura council, continues to enjoy full backing from the central leadership.
He called on members to prioritise unity, maintain strict discipline, and steer clear of internal conflicts that could harm the party’s long-term struggle.
“Conduct self-reflection with fairness. Unity within the movement must be preserved to ensure the continuity of the party’s struggle and prevent enemies from exploiting divisions,” he urged.
Background of the Perlis Crisis
The political storm in Perlis began in late December when eight assemblymen – five from Bersatu and three from PAS – reportedly withdrew support for then-menteri besar Shukri Ramli.
Shukri resigned shortly after, citing health reasons.
PAS responded by expelling its three dissenting assemblymen: Ridzuan Hashim (Guar Sanji), Fakhrul Anwar Ismail (Bintong), and Saad Seman (Chuping).
Bersatu’s Abu Bakar Hamzah was later appointed as the new menteri besar.
