Seputeh MP Teresa Kok has warned that she will pursue contempt of court proceedings against Sungai Besar Umno chief Jamal Yunos if he continues making defamatory statements that violate a High Court injunction.
Warning of legal action over repeated breaches
In a statement posted on Facebook today, Kok said she would have no choice but to instruct her lawyers to initiate the necessary steps should such remarks persist.
“This is not a step I take lightly, but it may become unavoidable if such irresponsible conduct persists,” she said.
Kok stressed that the existing High Court injunction must be respected, and that repeating or republishing defamatory content in defiance of it is a serious offence.
“Court orders are not optional, and no individual is above the law,” she added.
Background to the long-running defamation case
Kok filed a defamation suit against Jamal in 2017 after he accused her of misappropriating funds from Yayasan Warisan Anak Selangor under the state government’s Skim Mesra Usia Emas initiative.
In 2022, the High Court ruled in her favour, ordering Jamal to pay more than RM300,000 in damages plus costs.
Jamal deposited RM300,000 into a stakeholder account pending his appeal, but the remaining RM66,061.65 for costs and interest has not been settled.
Kok later obtained a writ of seizure to recover the outstanding amount.
Response to Jamal’s recent auction and remarks
Yesterday, Jamal auctioned a slipper and a towel he wore during a 2016 protest to raise funds for the balance.
He also suggested that Kok consider starting a small-scale pig farm “if her house is not located in Selangor”.
Kok said she had shown restraint and refrained from responding to earlier provocations.
However, she described Jamal’s latest comments as crude, morally irresponsible and an attempt to mock a court-ordered payment.
“To turn compliance with a court decision into a vulgar insinuation is not only offensive, but reflects a troubling disregard for basic decency and respect for the judicial process,” she said.
Kok expressed regret that Jamal continued to make provocative statements that could inflame tensions, create disharmony and weaken respect for the rule of law.
“I sincerely hope that he will reflect, stop making defamatory insinuations, and conduct himself responsibly moving forward,” she added.
