Tasek Gelugor MP Wan Saiful Wan Jan has withdrawn his appeal against his expulsion from Bersatu.
In a Facebook post, Wan Saiful announced that he had sent a letter to the party’s disciplinary board to inform them of his decision.
Decision to drop appeal
Wan Saiful explained that he was originally accused of pushing for Perikatan Nasional to set up an executive committee and later a presidential council.
He pointed out that Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin had himself advocated for a similar structure.
“This is the hypocrisy displayed by Muhyiddin and his sycophants,” Wan Saiful wrote.
Criticism of party direction
In his letter to the disciplinary board, Wan Saiful expressed concern over Bersatu’s future.
He said Muhyiddin was allowing himself to be influenced by figures such as party secretary-general Azmin Ali.
“This has led to Bersatu straying from its people-centric agenda,” he added.
Wan Saiful was expelled by Bersatu in October for allegedly breaching the party’s constitution and code of conduct.
Background to expulsion and appeal
On Feb 3, he submitted the grounds for his appeal to the party’s appeals board.
The disciplinary board had decided to remove Wan Saiful along with several other division chiefs.
Reports linked the action to claims that the group was involved in a “statutory declaration (SD) movement” aimed at removing Muhyiddin from leadership.
A viral WhatsApp message had alleged that Wan Saiful organised the collection of SDs to support then-deputy president Hamzah Zainudin taking over the party.
Muhyiddin had earlier referred to a plot to gather signatures against him during his policy speech at the party’s annual general meeting, which he said caused disruption.
Hamzah was sacked on Feb 13.
