Mohamed Azmin Ali has resigned as secretary-general of Perikatan Nasional (PN).
The Hulu Kelang assemblyman and Selangor opposition leader announced his decision in a Facebook post today.
He explained that his appointment came under Muhyiddin Yassin’s authority as PN chairman.
Effective Date and Reasoning
Azmin’s resignation takes effect on January 1, 2026.
This follows Muhyiddin Yassin’s earlier decision to step down as coalition chairman.
He has also relinquished his position as Selangor PN chief.
Other Resignations in PN
Johor PN chief Dr Sahruddin Jamal has similarly resigned from his post.
These developments come amid ongoing changes within the opposition coalition.
Muhyiddin had previously confirmed his own departure from the chairmanship.
Youth Leaders Call for Consensus
Youth leaders from Bersatu, Gerakan, and MIPP issued a joint statement on the matter.
They insisted that the new PN chairman must be appointed through consensus.
The statement was signed by Bersatu Youth chief Muhammad Hilman Idham, Gerakan Youth chief Lee Boon Shian, and MIPP Youth chief Justin Prabakaran.
Notable Absence
PAS Youth chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden did not endorse the joint statement.
His name was absent from the document.
This occurs against a backdrop of tensions in the coalition.
Underlying Tensions
Relations between Bersatu and PAS have grown strained.
The friction stems from the recent political crisis in Perlis.
In that situation, Bersatu assumed the menteri besar post previously held by PAS.
