Leadership changes within Perikatan Nasional (PN) have continued to widen, spreading to the state level following Muhyiddin Yassin’s announcement that he will step down as coalition chairman on Jan 1, 2026.
Perak PN chairman Ahmad Faizal Azumu and Johor PN chairman Sahruddin Jamal have since announced their resignations.
Earlier, PN secretary-general Azmin Ali also said he would step down in tandem with Muhyiddin, signalling that the coalition has entered a new phase of leadership adjustment following the Perlis political crisis.
Ahmad Faizal announced on Facebook that he would resign as Perak PN chairman, effective Jan 1, 2026.
“I respect that the power of appointment is the prerogative of the chairman. Therefore, I hereby announce my resignation as Perak PN chairman effective Jan 1, 2026,” he said.
He also expressed his appreciation to the leadership and members of Perak PN’s component parties for their cooperation, support and trust during his tenure.
Meanwhile, Bersatu leader Sahruddin Jamal resigned as Johor PN chairman.
The Bukit Kepong assemblyman said he made the decision after Muhyiddin stepped down as PN chairman.
“Muhyiddin appointed me. Since he resigned, I also resigned,” he said.
The former Johor menteri besar added that the Muafakat Nasional leadership can now appoint a new Johor PN chairman, a remark widely seen as linked to discussions on reviving the alliance.
Sahruddin said he hoped the next Johor PN chairman would be able to help the coalition secure more seats in the state, where Bersatu holds two seats and PAS holds one.
Muhyiddin has led PN since its official registration in August 2020. The recent Perlis political crisis, which saw the menteri besar’s post shift from PAS to Bersatu, is viewed as a key factor behind the current leadership shake-up.
