At least six people were killed and another wounded in a mass shooting at a popular fresh food market in Thailand’s capital on July 28, police confirmed.
The fatalities included the gunman, who died by suicide, according to Deputy Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, Charin Gopatta, speaking to Reuters.
Four security guards at the Or Tor Kor Market — known for selling agricultural produce and local delicacies — were shot dead, along with one woman, the Erawan Emergency Medical Centre, which monitors Bangkok hospitals, reported.
“Police are investigating the motive. At this stage, it is classified as a mass shooting,” said Worapat Sukthai, deputy police chief of Bangkok’s Bang Sue district, where the incident occurred, in comments to AFP.
He added that the suspect took his own life following the attack and that authorities were working to confirm his identity, while also investigating any potential links to ongoing border clashes between Thailand and Cambodia.
The Or Tor Kor Market, where the shooting took place, is located a short distance from Bangkok’s Chatuchak Market, a major tourist attraction that draws large crowds every weekend.
Mass shootings are relatively frequent in Thailand, where firearms are easily accessible due to lax enforcement of gun control laws.
