A Bersatu Supreme Council member, Wan Saiful Wan Jan, announced plans to refer party secretary-general Azmin Ali to the disciplinary board over alleged threats made against division leaders linked to a purported plot to oust president Muhyiddin Yassin. Wan Saiful also intends to file a similar complaint against Bersatu information chief Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz.
“I will likely submit the complaints within the next day or two,” Wan Saiful said during a press conference in Kuala Lumpur on September 29, 2025.
The move follows Wan Saiful’s confirmation that statutory declarations (SDs) were collected from division chiefs ahead of Bersatu’s annual general meeting (AGM) on September 9, 2025, allegedly to push for Muhyiddin’s removal. The Tasek Gelugor MP clarified that the SDs were misrepresented by certain parties to portray a negative narrative, insisting they were not intended to topple the party president.
Reports indicated that hours before Muhyiddin’s keynote address at the AGM, 122 of 169 division chiefs gathered for lunch 5km away from the Ideal Convention Centre, where the assembly was held, in an apparent show of dissent. During his policy speech, Muhyiddin acknowledged a plot to collect signatures to oust him, which sparked significant disruption.
Despite the unrest, the AGM concluded with delegates unanimously endorsing Muhyiddin as Bersatu’s prime minister candidate, securing his leadership position.
Wan Saiful revealed that on August 19, 2025, Azmin summoned two division leaders, Suhaimi Ghazali (Sepang) and Shukor Mustafa (Puchong), to a meeting at party headquarters. He alleged that Azmin threatened to exclude them as election candidates unless they retracted their SDs. Wan Saiful emphasized that the duo refused, as the SDs were unrelated to any effort to remove Muhyiddin, and neither leader had signed documents supporting such a plot.
“How can they retract something they didn’t sign?” Wan Saiful questioned.
He further claimed that Azmin insisted the leaders would not be named as candidates if they did not comply and implied that he, Wan Saiful, would face the same consequence. “Azmin gave the impression he holds the authority to decide on candidates,” Wan Saiful said, highlighting concerns over the secretary-general’s conduct.
