Umno Youth Chief Dr Akmal Saleh has brushed off Penang DAP Youth’s call for the party to sever political ties with him.
The Merlimau assemblyman stressed that such a move would be equivalent to cutting ties with the entire Umno Youth wing, and indirectly, with Umno itself — the backbone party of Barisan Nasional (BN).
“Bring it on,” he said in a brief Facebook post today, attaching a screenshot of a news article about the call.
Earlier, Penang DAP Youth had urged the party leadership to cut political ties with Akmal, citing his allegedly provocative actions.
This came a day after Akmal led a protest outside a hardware store in Kepala Batas, Penang, following a viral video showing the shop owner, Pang Chin Tian, hanging the Malaysian flag (Jalur Gemilang) upside down.
Pang explained that the flag was hung incorrectly by mistake while he was measuring the length of a metal pole.
Police have opened an investigation into the incident and urged all parties to remain calm.
However, Akmal still led a group of Umno Youth members to gather in front of the shop, joined by members of Bersatu Youth.
The protest, attended by about 300 people, was held after Akmal had warned that if the authorities failed to charge the shop owner within two days, he would “personally teach” Pang a lesson.
