A tragic accident at the Bukit Kajang toll plaza yesterday claimed the life of a one-year-old child and left eight others injured, prompting a thorough police investigation into the circumstances surrounding the multi-vehicle collision. The lorry driver, aged 42, admitted to jumping out of his vehicle during the incident but insisted that brake failure forced his actions, according to Kajang police chief Naazron Abdul Yusof, as reported by Berita Harian.
The driver has been remanded for two days to assist with ongoing investigations, Naazron confirmed. “In addition to the driver, we have recorded statements from five individuals, including his employer, who owns the lorry,” he said. The vehicle has been sent for inspection to verify the driver’s claim of mechanical failure. “Records indicate the lorry underwent maintenance in April 2025. We are investigating whether the crash resulted from brake failure or other factors,” Naazron added.
The incident involved a lorry, two SUVs, and a car, leading to catastrophic consequences. A one-year-old child was killed, while an adult male trapped beneath one of the SUVs was extricated and rushed to a hospital. Seven other victims sustained injuries and received medical treatment. The case is being investigated under charges of reckless or dangerous driving causing death.
Naazron revealed that the driver has a prior criminal record, with three cases linked to drug and criminal offenses, alongside four traffic summonses issued in 2013 and 2016. However, a urine test conducted after the driver’s arrest tested negative for drugs and alcohol, ruling out intoxication as a factor in the crash.
Authorities are continuing their probe to establish the precise cause of the accident, with a focus on the lorry’s mechanical condition and the driver’s actions. The tragedy has underscored the need for stringent vehicle maintenance and road safety measures, as the community mourns the loss of a young life and hopes for the recovery of those injured.
