Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced that Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to an “immediate and unconditional” ceasefire following deadly border clashes.
Thailand’s acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai and Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Manet met on Monday at Anwar’s official residence in Putrajaya for ceasefire talks.
“We have seen very positive developments and results that bode well for both countries,” Anwar said, flanked by both leaders.
The meeting, aimed at halting clashes that have killed at least 35 people and displaced more than 270,000, was also attended by the US and Chinese ambassadors.
Anwar said US President Donald Trump and Chinese leaders had been in close contact with both nations and Malaysia to find a peaceful resolution. The ceasefire will take effect at midnight (1200 GMT) on July 28, with military commanders from both sides scheduled to meet Tuesday.
“This is a vital first step toward de-escalation and restoring peace and security,” Anwar added.
Hun Manet praised Trump’s “decisive role” and expressed hope the agreement would help “rebuild trust” with Thailand.
Phumtham also confirmed Thailand would implement the ceasefire “in good faith.”
