A source in Thailand’s Second Army Area confirmed at 11:13pm on Monday (July 28) the death of General Srey Duk, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Cambodian Army and Commander of the 3rd Support Division, during a border clash with Thai forces.
According to a report from The Nation, General Srey Duk was a close ally of former Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, with whom he fought alongside in earlier conflicts.
Srey Duk had also represented Cambodia in key negotiations with Maj Gen Somphop Paravech, commander of Thailand’s Suranaree Task Force, over the Chong Bok border dispute. The talks led to the backfilling of trenches and troop repositioning on June 8, 2025, moves once seen as progress toward de-escalation, now overshadowed by renewed hostilities.
Yesterday, the two sides had agreed to an “immediate and unconditional” ceasefire after talks in Malaysia that aimed to halt the worst fighting between the neighbouring countries in more than a decade.
Meanwhile, at 10:28pm the same night, the Royal Thai Air Force deployed two F-16 fighter jets to conduct a strategic strike over the Ta Kwai temple area. The mission targeted Cambodian supply routes and artillery positions.
The mission was declared a success, with both jets returning safely to base.
