Chan Foong Hin, DAP candidate for Tanjung Aru, has called on voters to choose political stability in the coming state election, saying frequent government changes have held Sabah back.
Too Many Changes, Too Little Progress
In an exclusive interview with FMT in Pulau Gaya, the Sabah DAP deputy chairman pointed out that Sabah has had 16 chief ministers while neighbouring Sarawak has only had six.
“We have changed governments many times. That has disrupted long-term planning and slowed down our development,” Chan said.
Freedom Yes, But Stability First
Chan made clear he is not against political competition or the right to contest.
“You are free to participate, campaign, and stand for election. But when you vote, please think about the long-term impact. Stability is the foundation Sabah needs if we want to leap forward in the coming years,” he added.
Crowded Race in Tanjung Aru
Nine candidates are vying for the Tanjung Aru seat this month. They include incumbent Junz Wong of Warisan, who won in 2020 with a 3,147-vote majority, Suhaimi Buang (Perikatan Nasional), Dennison R Indang (Upko), Hiew Choon Yu (Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku), Yee Wee Ping (Parti Impian Sabah), Loh Ee Eng (Parti Bumi Kenyalang), and independents Zaim Ansawi and Ritchie Jay Cheng.
Protecting Gig Workers and Fishermen
If elected, Chan wants to expand social protection for informal workers in Tanjung Aru.
Many residents work as Grab drivers, delivery riders, fishermen, or freelancers. Chan plans to help them register for the Self-Employment Social Security Scheme (SKSPS) under Perkeso.
“The government already subsidises 70% of the contribution. I will personally cover the remaining 30% for those who sign up, so more people can enjoy medical and disability benefits,” he said.
Easing Traffic at Tanjung Aru Beach
Chan also aims to solve the chronic traffic jam at Tanjung Aru Beach caused by the single-lane road that serves as both entry and exit.
He has already discussed with Kota Kinabalu City Hall a one-way traffic system and a new bypass road to improve flow and reduce congestion for visitors and locals alike.
