Two Chinese tourists have been detained in Tawau for allegedly sending a threatening email claiming a bomb was on board a flight from Tawau to Kota Kinabalu, following their failure to secure a seat change.
Tawau police chief Jasmin Hussin reported that the arrests were made after an airline staff member filed a police report at approximately 3 p.m. yesterday, according to Berita Harian. The suspects, a 28-year-old woman and a 29-year-old man, have been remanded for four days until September 27.
The case is under investigation for criminal intimidation under Sections 506 and 505(b) of the Penal Code, as well as misuse of communication networks under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
The couple had reportedly returned from a holiday in Semporna and were scheduled to board a flight to Kota Kinabalu today. After contacting their travel agent to request a seat change and receiving no response, they sent the hoax email to the airline’s headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.
